I am glad that the NNS project found a contemporary record to make a decision about what is the "best" surname to use. We all know that names have changed over time and even more so when settlers from one language group emigrated to a land where a different language was spoken. My French-speaking Huguenot ancestors would probably be turning in their graves to know how their descendants are named in these US of A.
I too prefer seeing continuity in surnames! However not everyone agrees with that. If they did, the current USA President would have his grandfather's surname of DRUMPF instead of the altered surname of TRUMP.
So many of our ancestors could not read & write, so we don't really know the correct spelling they may have used. Contemporanious records like the census often have spelling errors because, for instance, German names were written by an English only speaker & how he interpreted what he heard the person say. Our ancestors did not have identification cards to carry around like we do today :)
Please look at naming guidelines to determine which should be the LNAB - Van Etten OR VanEtten. I think there is a space between the 2 words in this Surname. But I am not an expert!
